Sinbad (1891 musical)

Sinbad was an American musical extravaganza with a score by John J. Braham, lyrics by Harry B. Smith and Charles Alfred Klein, and a book by Harry B. Smith and Clay M. Greene. It was loosely based on the tales of Sinbad the Sailor from One Thousand and One Nights.

The musical premiered at the Chicago Opera House on November 16, 1891, and subsequently played at Niblo's Garden in New York City, opening on December 28, 1891.

Sinbad was known for its lavish staging, spectacular effects, and broad comedy. It was a popular example of the large-scale musical productions common in the late 19th century. Performers included Eddie Foy Sr., who became a well-known figure in American musical theatre. The show involved elements of burlesque and vaudeville, reflecting the theatrical trends of the period. The plot was relatively simple, providing a framework for musical numbers, dance routines, and elaborate visual displays.
