Sideburns

Sideburns (also known as sideboards, mutton chops, or side whiskers) are patches of facial hair grown on the sides of the face, extending from the hairline towards the cheeks. They are an extension of the hair on the head, grown downward along the sides of the face. Sideburns typically stop somewhere between the top of the ear and the corner of the mouth.

The style and length of sideburns have varied greatly throughout history and across different cultures. Some styles are thin and neatly trimmed, while others are thick, bushy, and extend further down the face. Sideburns can be worn by men and women, although they are more commonly associated with men.

Historically, sideburns gained popularity in the 19th century, taking their name from American Civil War General Ambrose Burnside, who sported a distinctive and elaborate style. Before this association, they were often referred to as "burnsides," but the term shifted to "sideburns" over time.

They have experienced periods of popularity and decline, influenced by social norms, celebrity endorsements, and evolving concepts of masculinity and femininity.
