Second Battle of Lahore (1759)
The Second Battle of Lahore, also known as the Battle of Lahore of 1759, was fought between the Maratha Empire and the Durrani Empire in 1759. The battle resulted in a decisive victory for the Durrani forces under the command of Ahmad Shah Durrani, also known as Ahmad Shah Abdali.
Prior to the battle, the Maratha Empire, under the leadership of Raghunathrao, had extended its influence into the Punjab region. Lahore was under Maratha control, governed by their appointed officials. However, Ahmad Shah Durrani, seeking to consolidate his control over the Punjab and prevent Maratha expansion, launched an invasion.
The battle itself involved a clash between the Maratha forces stationed in Lahore and the advancing Durrani army. Despite putting up resistance, the Marathas were outnumbered and outmaneuvered. The Durrani army, known for its cavalry and fighting prowess, inflicted heavy losses on the Marathas, leading to their defeat.
Following the victory, Ahmad Shah Durrani re-established his control over Lahore and the Punjab. This victory marked a significant setback for the Maratha Empire's ambitions in the region and paved the way for further conflicts between the two powers, culminating in the Third Battle of Panipat in 1761. The Second Battle of Lahore is therefore a key event in understanding the power dynamics and shifting alliances in 18th-century India.
