Sanmenxia
Sanmenxia is a prefecture-level city in western Henan province, China. Located on the southern bank of the Yellow River, it borders Shanxi province to the north and Shaanxi province to the west. Its name literally means "Three Gate Gorge," referring to three islands (now submerged) that once divided the Yellow River channel and created a dangerous rapid.
Geography and Climate:
Sanmenxia lies in a transitional zone between the Loess Plateau and the North China Plain. The terrain is characterized by mountains, hills, and plains. The Yellow River flows through the city, providing a vital water source. The climate is temperate continental, with distinct seasons. Summers are hot and humid, while winters are cold and dry.
History:
Sanmenxia has a long history, with evidence of human settlement dating back thousands of years. The area was strategically important due to its location on the Yellow River and its proximity to major population centers. In the 1950s, the Sanmenxia Dam was built on the Yellow River, a massive project intended to control flooding and generate electricity. The dam's construction displaced hundreds of thousands of people and had significant environmental consequences.
Economy:
Sanmenxia's economy is based on a mix of industries, including mining (particularly aluminum and gold), manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism. The city is known for its rich mineral resources. Agriculture focuses on crops such as wheat, corn, and cotton. Tourism is developing, highlighting the Yellow River scenery, historical sites, and the controversial Sanmenxia Dam.
Administration:
Sanmenxia is a prefecture-level city, comprising two districts (Hubin and Shanzhou), two county-level cities (Lingbao and Yima), and two counties (Mianchi and Lushi).
Transportation:
Sanmenxia is a transportation hub, with railway lines and highways connecting it to other parts of China. The Longhai Railway, a major east-west rail line, passes through the city.
Points of Interest:
- Sanmenxia Dam: A large-scale hydroelectric dam on the Yellow River.
- Hangu Pass: An ancient strategic pass located in Lingbao, historically significant for its role in controlling access to the Guanzhong Plain.
- E'mei Mountain (Henan): Not to be confused with the more famous Emei Mountain in Sichuan. This E'mei Mountain is located within Sanmenxia.
- Yellow River Wetland Nature Reserve: Protects the diverse ecosystem of the Yellow River floodplain.
