Sand River (Ontario)

The Sand River is a river located in Algoma District in Northeastern Ontario, Canada. It flows approximately 160 kilometers (99 miles) from its headwaters near the Chapleau Crown Game Preserve, south into Lake Superior.

The river is renowned for its scenic beauty, particularly the cascades and waterfalls along its course. A popular destination for wilderness canoe trips and backcountry hiking, the Sand River Provincial Park protects a significant portion of the river and its surrounding watershed.

Historically, the Sand River served as an important transportation route for Indigenous peoples and later for fur traders. Traces of these historical uses can still be found along the river corridor.

The Sand River's watershed supports a diverse range of flora and fauna, including various species of fish, birds, and mammals characteristic of the Canadian Shield. The river's ecosystem is relatively pristine due to its remoteness and protected status within the provincial park.
