SS Irwell

The SS Irwell was a British cargo steamship built in 1902 by William Doxford & Sons Ltd. of Sunderland. She was owned and operated by the Manchester Liners company, primarily serving the Manchester to Montreal route. The Irwell was one of the workhorses of the Manchester Liners fleet in the early 20th century, engaged in transporting goods and passengers across the Atlantic. She was sunk by a German U-boat, U-57, on December 26, 1917, in the Irish Sea. All 36 crew members perished. Her sinking represents a significant loss of life and a casualty of World War I’s U-boat campaign.
