SM U-12 (Germany)
SM U-12 was a German Type U 9 U-boat built for the Imperial German Navy (Kaiserliche Marine). She was launched on 30 May 1911, and commissioned on 2 August 1911. During World War I, U-12 operated primarily in the North Sea and English Channel.
U-12 achieved some notable successes, sinking a number of merchant ships and naval vessels. Her most significant victory was the sinking of the British destroyer HMS Acheron on 26 May 1915.
However, her career was short-lived. On 10 March 1915, while attempting to attack British ships off the coast of Scotland, U-12 was spotted and engaged by British destroyers. She was rammed and sunk by HMS Ariel. Nineteen of her crew members were rescued, but the majority perished. The wreck of U-12 lies off the coast of Fife, Scotland.
