Shoes (American band)

Shoes are an American power pop band formed in Zion, Illinois in 1974. The original lineup consisted of brothers John and Jeff Murphy, Gary Klebe, and Skip Meyer.

Shoes are best known for their DIY approach to recording and their influential independent releases in the late 1970s. They gained a significant following after independently releasing their first two albums, Head vs. Heart (1974, re-released 1979) and Black Vinyl Shoes (1977), recorded primarily in their home. These albums were notable for their raw sound and catchy melodies, a style that became a hallmark of the band.

The band subsequently signed with Elektra Records and released several albums, including Present Tense (1979), Tongue Twister (1981), and Boomerang (1982). While these albums were more polished than their independent releases, they maintained the band's signature power pop sound.

Following their stint with Elektra, Shoes continued to record and release music independently, often experimenting with different recording techniques. Their later albums include Silhouette (1984), Stolen Wishes (1987), Propeller (1994), Fric-Frac (2006), and Ignite (2012).

Shoes are recognized for their contributions to the power pop genre and their pioneering role in the independent music scene. Their DIY ethic and commitment to their distinctive sound have earned them a dedicated fanbase and lasting influence.
