Rujing

Rujing (如淨), also known as Tiantong Rujing (天童如淨), was a prominent Chinese Chan Buddhist monk of the Caodong school (曹洞宗) during the Song Dynasty. He lived from 1163 to 1228. He is best known for being the teacher of Dogen Zenji (道元禅師), the founder of the Soto school (曹洞宗) of Zen Buddhism in Japan.

Rujing’s emphasis on shikantaza (只管打坐, “just sitting”) is considered central to his teachings. He urged practitioners to simply sit without seeking any particular result, goal, or enlightenment. This direct and uncompromising approach to meditation profoundly influenced Dogen and became a hallmark of Soto Zen practice.

Before becoming abbot of Tiantong Monastery (天童寺), Rujing resided in various monasteries and studied under several teachers, including Zhenxie Qingliao (真歇清了). He succeeded Qingliao's Dharma lineage.

His teachings are preserved in various texts, including records of his dialogues and instructions. While less extensively documented than those of some other Chan masters, Rujing's impact on Zen Buddhism, particularly through Dogen, is undeniable. His emphasis on direct experience in meditation continues to be a central aspect of the Caodong and Soto schools.
