Rondache

A rondache is a type of shield, typically round in shape, that was used from the 15th to the 17th centuries. Rondaches were popular among infantry and cavalry alike, offering protection from sword blows, spears, and other melee weapons. They were often constructed from metal, such as steel, and sometimes reinforced with wood or leather.

While primarily defensive, the rondache could also be used offensively. Some rondaches incorporated a central spike or boss that could be used for punching or deflecting attacks. The size of a rondache varied, but they were generally large enough to cover the wielder's torso. Elaborate designs and decorations were common, reflecting the wealth and status of the owner. The rondache saw significant use in Renaissance-era combat and fencing. The term is also sometimes used loosely to refer to any small, round shield.
