Rolling Thunder is a side-scrolling action platform game originally released in arcades in 1986 by Namco. It was later ported to various home consoles and computer systems, including the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Atari ST, Commodore 64, and Amstrad CPC.
The game's story centers around codenamed "Rolling Thunder," a member of the WCPO (World Crime Police Organization)'s special unit, as he attempts to rescue his partner, Leila Blitz, from a secret criminal organization known as Geldra. Geldra's leader, Maboo, has kidnapped Leila, and Rolling Thunder must infiltrate Geldra's fortified bases to save her.
Gameplay involves navigating through enemy-filled levels, utilizing cover, jumping, and shooting to defeat Geldra's masked soldiers, known as Hoodlums, as well as other bizarre creatures and robots. The player character is equipped with a standard pistol that can be upgraded with a machine gun by entering certain rooms. Ammunition is limited, adding a strategic element to combat. The game is noted for its distinctive animation style, challenging difficulty, and memorable music. The levels often feature hidden doors and passages, encouraging exploration.
