Robert S. Kerr (bishop)
Robert S. Kerr (1911 – 2000) was an American clergyman who served as a bishop in the Episcopal Church. He was the Bishop of Southern Virginia from 1969 to 1979.
Kerr was born in Burlington, North Carolina. He graduated from the University of North Carolina and Virginia Theological Seminary. He was ordained to the diaconate in 1936 and to the priesthood in 1937.
Prior to becoming bishop, Kerr served in several parishes in the Diocese of North Carolina, including as rector of St. Paul's Church in Edenton.
As Bishop of Southern Virginia, Kerr oversaw a period of significant change and social activism within the diocese. He was a strong advocate for racial equality and social justice. He also played a key role in the establishment of new diocesan programs and ministries.
Following his retirement in 1979, Kerr remained active in the Episcopal Church. He died in 2000.
