Rimouski (Province of Canada electoral district)
Rimouski was a historical electoral district in the province of Canada, used for elections to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada. It was located in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region of present-day Quebec.
History:
The riding was created in 1841, following the Act of Union which merged Upper and Lower Canada into the Province of Canada. It was based on the pre-existing electoral district of the same name in Lower Canada (also known as Bas-Canada).
The electoral district existed until Confederation in 1867, when the Province of Canada was dissolved and replaced by the provinces of Ontario and Quebec. At Confederation, the riding of Rimouski was re-organized into electoral districts for the Quebec Legislative Assembly and the House of Commons of Canada.
Boundaries:
The boundaries of the riding corresponded roughly to the geographic area of the modern Rimouski-Neigette Regional County Municipality. Further research is needed to provide a detailed and definitive description of the precise historical boundaries.
Representation:
Rimouski was represented by one member in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada. The historical election results and representatives elected from Rimouski can be found in archival records and historical publications related to the Province of Canada. Further research is needed to compile a complete list of representatives.
