Richard Palmer (priest)

Richard Palmer (died 1191) was a medieval Benedictine monk, administrator, and Archbishop of Messina.

Palmer entered the monastic life at Christ Church, Canterbury. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming prior of the monastery. In 1183, he was appointed treasurer of England by King Henry II. He also served as a royal clerk.

In 1189, Palmer was elected Archbishop of Messina. The election was controversial, as it was not canonically regular, apparently influenced by King Richard I of England, who was in Sicily at the time of the Third Crusade. His installation took place on 27 November 1189.

During his time as Archbishop, Palmer was embroiled in political and ecclesiastical affairs related to the Crusades. He helped mediate disputes between Richard I and Philip II of France. He also worked to provide support and resources for the English crusaders.

Richard Palmer died in 1191 while still Archbishop of Messina.
