Ribagorça
Ribagorça is a historical and geographical region located in the Pyrenees mountains, primarily spanning the present-day autonomous communities of Aragon and Catalonia in Spain. Historically, it was a county (the County of Ribagorça) which played a significant role during the Reconquista.
Geographically, Ribagorça is defined by the valleys of the rivers Ésera and Isábena, and encompasses diverse landscapes from high mountain peaks to lower, more fertile areas. This geographical diversity has historically shaped its economy, with agriculture, livestock farming, and forestry being important activities.
Culturally, Ribagorça represents a transition zone, influenced by both Aragonese and Catalan traditions. The local dialects, architecture, and customs reflect this unique blend. The region is known for its Romanesque churches and other historical monuments, testaments to its rich past.
Administratively, present-day Ribagorça is divided. Most of the historical county now falls within the comarca (county) of Ribagorza in Aragon, while a smaller portion is located within the Alta Ribagorça and Pallars Sobirà comarques in Catalonia.
