Regina (Lortzing)

Regina is a comic opera in three acts by Albert Lortzing, composed in 1848 and premiered on March 3, 1848, at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. Lortzing wrote the libretto himself, based on the French play Les Demoiselles de Saint-Cyr by Alexandre Dumas the Elder and Anne Bourgeois.

The opera is set in France during the reign of Louis XIV and revolves around the lives and loves of the young women at a boarding school for noble girls, particularly Regina, the Countess of Montalban. The story involves mistaken identities, romantic entanglements, and ultimately, the triumph of true love. It is considered one of Lortzing's less frequently performed works, but it retains a place in the operatic repertoire.
