Ray Stewart (Scottish footballer)
Ray Stewart (born 7 September 1964) is a Scottish former professional footballer who played as a defender.
Stewart began his career with Dundee United, making his debut in 1982. He was a key member of the Dundee United team that won the Scottish Premier Division title in 1983. He also played in the UEFA Cup semi-final in 1982 and the UEFA Cup final in 1987, both against IFK Gothenburg, with Dundee United losing both ties.
In 1988, Stewart transferred to West Ham United for a fee of £425,000. He became a regular in the West Ham defence and was known for his penalty-taking ability. He scored several important goals from the penalty spot during his time with the club. He also notably scored a hat-trick of penalties against Manchester City in 1991.
After leaving West Ham in 1991, Stewart joined St Johnstone. He later played for Reading and Stirling Albion before retiring from professional football.
Stewart was capped 10 times for Scotland.
