Ratter (dog)

A "ratter" dog is a colloquial term referring to a breed or individual dog with a strong instinct and ability to hunt and kill rodents, specifically rats. This term isn't associated with a single standardized breed, but rather describes a function or aptitude. Many terriers, such as the Jack Russell Terrier, Rat Terrier, and Yorkshire Terrier, are historically known as effective ratters due to their size, agility, and tenacity in pursuing vermin. However, other breeds, and even mixed-breed dogs, can exhibit ratter characteristics. The term often implies a dog with a high prey drive, quick reflexes, and a willingness to dig or otherwise pursue rodents in tight spaces. Their purpose was traditionally to control rodent populations in barns, stables, and homes. The term is still used today, often informally, to describe a dog's behavior and aptitude rather than its breed designation.
