Quarentinha (footballer, born 1934)
Quarentinha, also known as Waldir Cardoso Lebrêgo, (September 15, 1934 – February 11, 1996) was a Brazilian footballer who played as a forward. He is considered one of the greatest players in the history of Botafogo, known for his powerful shots and scoring ability.
Born in Belém, Pará, Quarentinha began his professional career at Paysandu before joining Botafogo in 1954. He spent the majority of his career with the Rio de Janeiro club, becoming a prolific goalscorer and a key figure in their success during the late 1950s and early 1960s. He helped Botafogo win the Campeonato Carioca (Rio de Janeiro State Championship) on several occasions.
Quarentinha also played for the Brazil national team, though his international career was relatively short. He was known for his strong personality and independent spirit, which sometimes led to disagreements with coaches and administrators.
After leaving Botafogo, Quarentinha played for several other clubs, including Vasco da Gama and Vitória. He retired from professional football in the late 1960s.
He is remembered as a legendary figure at Botafogo, and his name remains synonymous with the club's golden era. Despite a somewhat controversial career, his goalscoring record and contribution to Botafogo's success cemented his place as one of the club's all-time greats.
