Prince Wilhelm of Prussia (1906–1940)

Prince Wilhelm of Prussia (Wilhelm Friedrich Franz Joseph Christian Olaf; 4 July 1906 – 26 May 1940) was the eldest son of Crown Prince Wilhelm of Germany, and thus grandson of Kaiser Wilhelm II. Because his father never ascended the throne after the German Revolution of 1918–19, Wilhelm was never a crown prince.

Wilhelm renounced his succession rights in 1933 in order to marry Dorothea von Salviati, a commoner. This decision was met with considerable controversy within the Hohenzollern family. As a result, his younger brother, Louis Ferdinand, became the designated heir of the House of Hohenzollern.

During World War II, Wilhelm served as an officer in the German army. He was killed in action in France on 26 May 1940. His death reportedly generated considerable public sympathy for the fallen prince, leading to large crowds attending his funeral. Fearing that Wilhelm's death would foster sympathy for the monarchy and undermine Nazi authority, Adolf Hitler ordered that no further members of formerly ruling German houses be allowed to serve on the front lines. He was married to Dorothea von Salviati and had two daughters, Princess Felicitas Cecilie Alexandrine Helene Dorothea of Prussia (1934-2009) and Princess Christa Friederike Viktoria Luise of Prussia (born 1936).
