Portuguesa (state)
Portuguesa is one of the 23 states of Venezuela. It is located in the west-central region of the country.
Overview: Portuguesa is primarily an agricultural state, often referred to as the "Granary of Venezuela" due to its significant production of crops such as corn, rice, sorghum, and sunflowers. The state capital is Guanare.
Geography: The state is situated in the Llanos region, characterized by flat, grassy plains. The terrain gradually rises toward the Andes Mountains in the northwest. Key rivers include the Portuguesa River, from which the state derives its name, and the Guanare River.
History: Portuguesa's history dates back to pre-Columbian times, with indigenous groups inhabiting the area. During the colonial period, the region was part of the province of Caracas. The state of Portuguesa was officially established in 1909.
