Pleurias

Pleurias was an Illyrian king who ruled over a part of southern Illyria during the 4th century BC. He is primarily known for his conflicts with the growing power of Macedon under Philip II. He appears to have been a leader of considerable strength and influence, capable of uniting Illyrian tribes in opposition to Macedonian expansionism.

Pleurias is mentioned in historical sources, though the exact details of his reign and the extent of his territory are not fully known. He is believed to have controlled territories adjacent to Macedon, making him a direct obstacle to Philip II's ambitions. Historical accounts suggest that Pleurias engaged in military activities against Macedon, likely through raids and skirmishes aimed at disrupting Macedonian expansion and consolidating Illyrian power.

While the ultimate outcome of Pleurias's struggles against Macedon is not definitively documented, it's understood that the Macedonians eventually gained the upper hand in the region. The rise of Alexander the Great, Philip II's successor, solidified Macedonian dominance and brought much of Illyria under Macedonian control, diminishing the power of independent Illyrian kings like Pleurias. His resistance, however, is a notable example of Illyrian opposition to Macedonian hegemony in the years preceding Alexander's conquests.
