Philaeus (mythology)

Philaeus was a figure in Greek mythology, primarily associated with the story of Heracles and his labors. He is generally considered to be one of the sons of Ajax the Great (Ajax Telamonius), making him a member of the heroic family from Salamis.

Philaeus is best known for his role in the story of Heracles' capture of Cerberus, the hound of Hades, as part of his twelve labors. When Heracles brought Cerberus to the surface, Philaeus, along with his brother Eurysaces, was said to have been terrified by the monstrous creature and fled from it.

While not a central character in many myths, Philaeus represents a connection to the prominent figure of Ajax and demonstrates the widespread impact of Heracles' heroic deeds, even on the descendants of other heroes. Sources are inconsistent regarding the details of his parentage and actions. Some accounts may conflate him with other individuals of the same or similar names.
