Peter Eccles (mathematician)

Peter John Eccles is a British mathematician specializing in algebraic topology. He is Emeritus Reader in Pure Mathematics at the University of Manchester, where he taught for many years.

Eccles's research interests primarily lie in stable homotopy theory, homological algebra, and group theory. He is known for his work on quadratic forms and their connection to topology, particularly the study of the J-homomorphism.

Eccles received his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge under the supervision of C.T.C. Wall.

He is the author of several books, including "An Introduction to Mathematical Reasoning: Numbers, Sets, and Functions" (Cambridge University Press), a widely used textbook aimed at bridging the gap between school mathematics and the more abstract concepts encountered in undergraduate mathematics courses. The book focuses on developing rigorous mathematical thinking and proof techniques. He also authored "Homotopy Groups: A Graduate Text" (Cambridge University Press), an in-depth treatment of homotopy theory.

Eccles has been an active member of the mathematical community, serving on committees and contributing to the development of mathematics education. His contributions to research and teaching have made a significant impact on the field of mathematics.
