People's Revolutionary Government (Grenada)
The People's Revolutionary Government (PRG) was the revolutionary socialist government that ruled Grenada from March 1979 to October 1983. It came to power following a coup led by Maurice Bishop and the New Jewel Movement (NJM), which overthrew the government of Eric Gairy.
The PRG implemented a number of socialist policies, including nationalization of key industries, improvements in education and healthcare, and land reform. They also focused on developing tourism and infrastructure, most notably the construction of the Maurice Bishop International Airport. The government pursued close ties with Cuba, the Soviet Union, and other socialist countries.
The PRG's rule was marked by both popular support and internal divisions within the NJM. Growing tensions between the moderate faction led by Maurice Bishop and the more radical faction led by Bernard Coard ultimately resulted in a coup in October 1983. Bishop and several of his supporters were executed, leading to a period of instability and ultimately the U.S.-led invasion of Grenada on October 25, 1983, which brought an end to the PRG. The invasion was condemned by many countries as a violation of international law, but it was supported by others who saw the PRG as a threat to regional stability. Following the invasion, an interim government was installed, and elections were held in 1984.
