John Jenkins (Gwili)
John Jenkins (Gwili) (1872-1936) was a Welsh poet and writer, known primarily by his bardic name, Gwili. He was born in Cwmfelin-Boeth, Carmarthenshire, Wales. Gwili made significant contributions to Welsh literature, particularly in the realms of hymn writing and poetry.
He received his education at Ammanford County School and then at Brecon Memorial College, becoming a Congregational minister. He served as a minister in various locations throughout Wales, including Dowlais and Swansea.
Gwili was a prominent figure in the Welsh literary scene of the early 20th century. He was a frequent competitor and winner at the National Eisteddfod, Wales's premier cultural festival. His works often explored themes of nature, religion, and Welsh identity. He served as Archdruid of Wales from 1932 until his death in 1936. As Archdruid, he presided over the Eisteddfod ceremonies.
His published works include collections of poetry and hymns. He is remembered for his contributions to the Welsh language and culture. He is regarded as one of the more influential figures in modern Welsh hymnody.
