Palaeste

Palaeste (also often spelled Paleste) is an ancient coastal settlement located in modern-day Albania. Situated on the Ionian Sea, it held strategic importance in antiquity due to its harbor and location along major trade routes.

History: Palaeste was likely founded by the Chaonians, an ancient Greek tribe inhabiting the region of Epirus. It became part of the Epirus kingdom and later the Roman Republic. During the Roman Civil War, Julius Caesar landed his legions near Palaeste in 48 BC before engaging Pompey's forces. The settlement played a role in subsequent Roman history, though details are often fragmented and dependent on archaeological findings and mentions in classical texts.

Geography: Palaeste's location near the modern village of Palasë (also often spelled Palase) in the Albanian Riviera provided natural defenses and access to maritime trade. The surrounding terrain is mountainous, sloping towards the sea. The area remains sparsely populated.
