Orizu I
Orizu I (1917-1994) was an Igbo Nigerian politician, educator, and statesman. He served briefly as President of Nigeria in 1965-1966 during a period of political instability.
Born Nwafor Orizu in Nnewi, Nigeria, he was a member of the prominent Orizu royal family. He received his early education in Nigeria before travelling to the United States for higher education. He studied at Lincoln University and Ohio State University, earning degrees in political science and related fields. While in the United States, he was a vocal advocate for Nigerian independence and Pan-Africanism.
Upon his return to Nigeria, Orizu became actively involved in politics. He was a member of the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC), a leading political party. He held several political positions, including President of the Nigerian Senate.
In 1965, following a period of political turmoil, Orizu became Acting President of Nigeria while President Nnamdi Azikiwe was abroad. He held this position until January 1966, when a military coup led by Major Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu overthrew the government. Orizu was effectively removed from power.
Following the coup, Orizu lived in exile for several years. He later returned to Nigeria and remained active in public life, although he did not hold major political office again. He continued to advocate for education and national unity. He died in 1994.
