Oncozygia
Oncozygia refers to a historical theory or speculation regarding a perceived evolutionary relationship between the Onchocercidae (a family of parasitic nematodes) and the Zygomycota (a phylum of fungi, now largely replaced by other classifications). The theory, now largely disregarded in light of modern phylogenetic and molecular evidence, posited a potential ancestral connection or shared evolutionary history between these two groups. This connection was primarily based on morphological or physiological similarities that were once interpreted as evidence of relatedness. Modern cladistic analysis and molecular phylogenetics have largely refuted this hypothesis, demonstrating that nematodes and zygomycetes (or their modern equivalents) are not closely related. The term "oncozygia" is therefore primarily of historical interest within the context of the development of evolutionary thought and the changing understanding of organismal relationships. It is no longer considered a valid taxonomic or phylogenetic designation.
