Oliver Smith (politician)
Oliver Smith (1766 – December 29, 1845) was an American lawyer and politician who served as a United States Senator from Indiana from 1833 to 1839.
Born in Windham County, Vermont, Smith moved to Ohio with his family in 1798. He studied law, was admitted to the bar, and began practicing in Connersville, Indiana. He served as a prosecuting attorney and as a member of the Indiana House of Representatives. He also served as a member of the Indiana Senate.
In 1833, Smith was elected to the U.S. Senate as a Whig. During his term, he advocated for internal improvements, particularly the construction of roads and canals. He was a strong supporter of the American System. He also served on committees dealing with land claims and Indian affairs.
Smith declined to run for reelection in 1838. Following his Senate term, he resumed his law practice in Connersville. He was a delegate to the Indiana constitutional convention of 1850. Smith died in Connersville, Indiana, in 1845. He is buried in the City Cemetery.
