Ngahere

Ngahere is the Māori word for forest or bush. It encompasses not only the trees themselves but also the entire ecosystem contained within, including the undergrowth, animals, insects, fungi, and other living organisms. The term reflects a holistic view of the natural world, where all elements are interconnected and interdependent. Ngahere holds significant cultural and spiritual importance for Māori, representing a source of sustenance, resources, and spiritual connection to the land (whenua). Traditionally, ngahere were carefully managed using sustainable practices to ensure their long-term health and productivity. Certain trees and areas within the ngahere may hold tapu (sacred) status. The concept of kaitiakitanga, guardianship and conservation, is strongly linked to the relationship between Māori and ngahere.
