Narol (Hasidic dynasty)
Narol is a Hasidic dynasty originating in the town of Narol, Galicia (present-day Poland). It was founded by Rabbi Yaakov Yisrael Twerski (d. 1940), a grandson of Rabbi Mordechai Twerski of Chernobyl, and a son of Rabbi Yitzchak Twerski of Rachmastrivka.
Rabbi Yaakov Yisrael established his court in Narol, attracting a following of Hasidim drawn to his piety and teachings. His leadership was characterized by an emphasis on fervent prayer and Torah study. The dynasty's traditions and customs reflect its roots in the Chernobyl lineage, with certain unique practices developed in Narol.
The Holocaust decimated the Narol Hasidic community. Rabbi Yaakov Yisrael Twerski perished in the Holocaust, along with much of his family and followers.
After World War II, remnants of the Narol Hasidic community attempted to rebuild in Israel and the United States. However, the dynasty did not fully re-establish itself to its pre-war prominence.
Today, although there is no single central figure recognized as the "Narol Rebbe," individuals with ties to the Narol lineage and traditions continue to identify with and maintain aspects of the Narol Hasidic heritage within various Hasidic communities. The teachings and stories of Rabbi Yaakov Yisrael Twerski are still studied and revered by those with connection to the dynasty.
