Mount Brown (philatelist)
Mount Brown (1807-1895) was a prominent Irish philatelist, recognized for his contributions to the early development of stamp collecting as a serious hobby and field of study. He is primarily known for his pioneering efforts in creating and popularizing pre-adhesive postal history collections, focusing specifically on markings, rates, and routes used before the introduction of postage stamps.
Brown was an early member of the Philatelic Society, London (later the Royal Philatelic Society London) and contributed articles to early philatelic publications. He possessed a large and significant collection of postal markings and pre-stamp covers, primarily related to Ireland and Great Britain. His work helped to establish the study of these postal artifacts as a legitimate and valuable area within philately. He died in the town of Rathmines, Dublin, Ireland. His collections, after his death, were disbursed and form part of many notable collections today.
