Mosul Eye

Mosul Eye was a social media presence, primarily a blog and accompanying social media accounts, created and maintained by an Iraqi historian during the occupation of Mosul by ISIS (also known as ISIL or Daesh) beginning in June 2014. Its primary purpose was to document the events occurring within the city from the perspective of a local resident, providing information about the daily lives of civilians under ISIS rule, including the group's activities, enforcement of their interpretation of Sharia law, and the humanitarian situation.

The anonymous individual behind Mosul Eye initially shared information through Facebook and later expanded to other platforms such as Twitter. The information provided was often critical of ISIS, offering a rare and unfiltered view of life inside the occupied city to the outside world.

The blog gained significant international attention as one of the few reliable sources of information coming directly from Mosul during the period of ISIS control. It provided valuable insights for journalists, researchers, and humanitarian organizations.

Following the liberation of Mosul in 2017, the individual behind Mosul Eye publicly revealed his identity. The project continues to operate, focusing on the reconstruction efforts, the challenges faced by the city's residents, and the preservation of Mosul's cultural heritage. Mosul Eye now also focuses on community development and advocacy.
