Schäffler
A Schäffler is a traditional barrel maker in Bavaria, Germany. The term refers specifically to the members of a guild who perform a traditional dance called the Schäfflertanz (barrel maker's dance).
The Schäfflertanz is a dance performed every seven years (though this has varied historically) by the Schäffler guild members. The tradition is said to have originated in Munich in 1517, after a severe plague. The barrel makers danced through the streets to bring cheer and encourage people to return to public life. The dance involves elaborate steps, formations, and the use of hoops decorated with greenery.
The Schäfflertanz is a significant part of Bavarian cultural heritage and is a popular event. The dancers are easily recognizable by their red jackets, black trousers, and green hats, and often carry barrel hoops. The dance is usually accompanied by traditional Bavarian music. Beyond the dance itself, the term "Schäffler" evokes a sense of tradition, community, and Bavarian identity.
