Morača (tribe)

The Morača were a historical tribe (pleme) inhabiting the region of Morača in present-day Montenegro. Their territory was primarily located in the mountainous area along the Morača River.

Historically, the Morača tribe was part of the wider Brda (Highlands) region, known for its independent and often rebellious stance against external powers, including the Ottoman Empire and later the Principality of Montenegro before its unification. The tribe was organized according to traditional tribal structures, emphasizing kinship, customary law, and collective responsibility. Key decisions were often made through assemblies of tribal elders.

The Morača Monastery, a significant Serbian Orthodox religious and cultural center, is located within the historical territory of the tribe and played an important role in the tribe's identity and resistance efforts.

The tribe's economy was traditionally based on livestock farming, small-scale agriculture, and trade.

While the traditional tribal structures have largely diminished with the modernization of Montenegro, the historical identity of the Morača tribe remains a significant aspect of the region's cultural heritage.
