Ministry of Internal Affairs (Turkmenistan)
The Ministry of Internal Affairs (Turkmenistan) (Turkmen: Türkmenistanyň Içeri işler ministrligi) is the Turkmen government ministry responsible for maintaining law and order in Turkmenistan. Its functions include policing, criminal investigations, traffic control, passport control, and maintaining correctional facilities. The Ministry is also involved in combating terrorism, drug trafficking, and other forms of organized crime.
The Ministry is headed by a Minister of Internal Affairs, who is appointed by the President of Turkmenistan. The current Minister is Muhammet Hydyrov. The Ministry's headquarters are located in Ashgabat.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs operates a number of subordinate agencies, including the Turkmen National Police, the State Migration Service, and the State Fire Service. It also oversees the internal troops of Turkmenistan. The Ministry is considered a key instrument of state power and plays a significant role in maintaining the authoritarian political system in Turkmenistan. Human rights organizations have frequently criticized the Ministry for alleged human rights abuses, including torture and ill-treatment of detainees.
