Minija

Minija is a river in western Lithuania. It is a right tributary of the Nemunas River.

Geography:

The Minija originates near Didžiaičiai village, in the Telšiai district municipality. It flows generally southwest, passing through or near Varniai, Plungė, Kartena, and Priekulė. It joins the Nemunas near Rusnė Island, close to the Curonian Lagoon.

Hydrology:

The river is approximately 202 kilometers (126 miles) in length and has a drainage basin of 2,940 square kilometers (1,140 sq mi). The Minija is known for its relatively fast current and rocky bed in its upper reaches.

Economy and Culture:

The Minija has been historically important for timber rafting and milling. The river valley supports agriculture and recreational activities, including fishing and kayaking. Several small towns and villages are situated along its banks. A unique feature is the village of Mingė, often called Lithuania's "Venice," where the main street is directly connected to the river and transportation is frequently via boat.

Protected Areas:

Parts of the Minija's course are located within protected areas, aiming to preserve its natural environment and biodiversity. These areas contribute to the ecological balance of the region.
