James Hume (mathematician)

James Hume (died 1666) was a Scottish mathematician active in France.

Hume is primarily known for his contributions to algebra and his pedagogical works. He served as a professor of mathematics in Paris, and was a prominent figure in Parisian intellectual circles during the 17th century. He authored several textbooks, notably on algebra, designed for students. These works were written in Latin and reflect the mathematical practices and understanding of the time.

His most significant publication is considered to be Algebra, which went through multiple editions. In this work, he presented algebraic techniques and solutions, often employing rhetorical algebra (where problems and solutions are expressed in words rather than symbolic notation), which was still common at the time. He also engaged with the algebraic ideas of other mathematicians, furthering the development of the field.

Hume died in Paris in 1666.
