Memorial Gymnasium (Virginia)
Memorial Gymnasium, often referred to simply as Mem Gym, is a multi-purpose gymnasium located on the campus of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. It primarily serves as a recreational and athletic facility for students, faculty, and staff. While not the primary venue for UVA's major intercollegiate athletic teams (those typically use venues like John Paul Jones Arena), Memorial Gymnasium provides space for intramural sports, club sports, physical education classes, and individual fitness activities.
Historically, Memorial Gymnasium served as the home court for the Virginia Cavaliers men's basketball team from its construction in 1924 until the opening of University Hall in 1965. It also hosted other intercollegiate athletic events. The building's name commemorates University of Virginia alumni who died in World War I.
Features of Memorial Gymnasium include basketball courts, volleyball courts, racquetball courts, squash courts, a weight room, and various fitness studios. It is managed by the University of Virginia's Department of Intramural and Recreational Sports. The facility undergoes periodic renovations and upgrades to maintain its utility for the university community.
