Mel Blyth
Mel Blyth (born 30 July 1944, Sculcoates, Kingston upon Hull, died 3 May 2010) was an English professional footballer who played as a centre-back. He is best known for his time at York City, where he made over 300 appearances, and for captaining Crystal Palace.
Blyth began his career with Scunthorpe United before moving to York City in 1965. He quickly became a key player for the Minstermen, renowned for his strength, aerial ability, and commanding presence in the defense. He was a mainstay of the York City team for a decade, and is regarded as a club legend.
In 1974, Blyth joined Crystal Palace, then in the Second Division. He was immediately appointed captain and played a crucial role in the team's promotion to the First Division in 1976–77. He remained at Crystal Palace until 1980, adding over 200 appearances to his career total.
After leaving Crystal Palace, Blyth played briefly for Mansfield Town before retiring from professional football. He later worked as a football coach and scout. Blyth is remembered as a tough, uncompromising defender and a respected leader, particularly at York City and Crystal Palace.
