Maxine Brown (soul singer)

Maxine Brown (born August 18, 1939) is an American soul singer, most active in the 1960s. She is best known for her hits "All in My Mind" (1960), "Funny" (1961), and "Oh No Not My Baby" (1964).

Brown was born in Kingstree, South Carolina, and raised in New York City. She began singing in church and later performed with local R&B groups. Her solo career took off after being signed to Nomar Records in 1960, where she released "All in My Mind," which reached number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

She continued to record throughout the 1960s, releasing albums on Wand Records and Mainstream Records. "Funny" and "Oh No Not My Baby" cemented her status as a prominent soul singer. "Oh No Not My Baby," written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King, remains her signature song and has been covered by numerous artists.

While she continued to record and perform sporadically in later years, Brown's peak success occurred during the 1960s, and her music remains popular on oldies stations and in soul music collections. She is considered an important figure in the development of soul music.
