Ia (cuneiform)

Ia is a cuneiform sign that appears in various ancient Mesopotamian texts, most notably during the Akkadian period and later. It represents a vowel sound, generally transcribed as "a". The value of "ia" is considered a diphthongal sound.

The sign's form can vary slightly depending on the period and the scribe. It is constructed from a combination of wedges, a defining characteristic of cuneiform writing. Unlike syllabic signs which represent consonant-vowel combinations, "ia" represents the vowel sound alone.

The sign "ia" is used both phonetically, to spell out words using its sound value, and as a determinative, a sign that indicates the category to which a word belongs without being pronounced itself. The determinative usage is less common for "ia" compared to other determinatives like "DINGIR" (god) or "KI" (place).
