Marshall Johnston (diplomat)

Marshall Johnston (born August 24, 1936, in Manitoba, Canada; died January 27, 2011, in Ottawa, Canada) was a Canadian diplomat who served as Canada's ambassador to several nations. He held posts including Ambassador to Sweden (1990-1993), Ambassador to the Soviet Union/Russia (1988-1990), and Ambassador to Finland (1993-1996).

Johnston joined the Department of External Affairs (now Global Affairs Canada) in 1963. Prior to his ambassadorships, he held various positions within the department, including serving as Director General of the Bureau of European Affairs. He was known for his expertise on Soviet and Eastern European affairs.

Following his diplomatic career, Johnston served as a visiting professor at Carleton University's Norman Paterson School of International Affairs. He also provided commentary and analysis on international relations issues. Johnston received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Manitoba and a Master of Arts degree from the London School of Economics. He was fluent in English, French, and Russian.
