Shantou (horse)
Shantou was a British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse best known for winning the St. Leger Stakes in 1972. Foaled in 1969, Shantou was owned by Charles Engelhard Jr. and trained by Peter Walwyn. Primarily campaigned in England, Shantou's career highlights included victories in the Predominate Stakes before his St. Leger triumph. He demonstrated stamina and resilience on the racecourse, factors contributing to his success in the classic St. Leger, run over a distance of approximately 1 mile, 6 furlongs. His racing career was relatively short, and he subsequently retired to stud. While not achieving comparable success as a stallion, Shantou left a minor impact on bloodlines through his progeny.
