Malta (European Parliament constituency)

The Malta constituency is a single, nationwide constituency electing Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) for the Republic of Malta. As Malta is a single member state constituency, it elects all of its MEPs through a single election using the single transferable vote (STV) system. This means voters rank candidates in order of preference, and candidates require a quota of votes to be elected. Excess votes are redistributed, allowing voters' preferences to influence the final outcome.

The number of MEPs Malta is entitled to send to the European Parliament is determined by the overall size of the Parliament and population considerations within the European Union. Historically, Malta has elected five or six MEPs. The electoral system and geographical scope of the constituency ensure that all Maltese voters can participate in the European Parliament elections.

Elections are generally held every five years, coinciding with the European Parliament elections across the EU. The results reflect the political landscape within Malta, with the two major political parties, the Labour Party and the Nationalist Party, typically dominating the seats. However, smaller parties and independent candidates can also contest the elections, offering voters a broader range of choices. The European Parliament election results provide an indication of public opinion and shifts in political allegiances within Malta.
