Malas (ayurveda)

In Ayurveda, Malas (मल) refers to the waste products of the body. They are essential components of the physiological processes, and their proper elimination is considered crucial for maintaining health and preventing disease. The three primary Malas are:

  • Purisha (पुरीष): Feces, the solid waste eliminated from the digestive system. Purisha is primarily formed in the large intestine from the undigested food matter and helps to maintain the integrity of the Vata dosha.

  • Mutra (मूत्र): Urine, the liquid waste eliminated from the urinary system. Mutra is produced by the kidneys as they filter waste products from the blood. It helps to balance Kapha dosha.

  • Sweda (स्वेद): Sweat, the liquid waste eliminated through the skin. Sweda is produced by the sweat glands and helps to regulate body temperature and eliminate toxins. It assists in balancing Pitta dosha.

Improper elimination of Malas, or their accumulation in the body, is believed to lead to various health problems. Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of maintaining healthy digestion, hydration, and lifestyle practices to ensure the proper formation and elimination of these waste products. Practices like proper diet, exercise, herbal remedies, and detoxification therapies (Panchakarma) are employed to regulate Mala production and elimination.
