Mainkreis (Bavaria)
Mainkreis (Main Circle) was an administrative district (''Kreis'') in Bavaria, Germany, that existed from 1862 until 1972. It was located in the Regierungsbezirk Unterfranken (Lower Franconia). The district was centered around the Main River, from which it derived its name. Its administrative seat was located in Würzburg.
The Mainkreis was abolished in the Bavarian administrative reforms of 1972, with its territory being largely incorporated into the newly formed districts of Würzburg and Kitzingen. Some smaller parts were assigned to other districts. The precise boundaries and constituent municipalities of the Mainkreis varied somewhat over its existence.
Further research may be needed to provide a more detailed list of municipalities that once belonged to the Mainkreis, as well as a more thorough account of its administrative history and significance.
