Magnus Olsson (sailor)

Magnus "Mange" Olsson (1949 – 2013) was a Swedish professional sailor, renowned for his participation in and leadership of multiple Whitbread Round the World Races (later the Volvo Ocean Race). He was considered one of the most respected and influential figures in the sport of offshore sailing.

Olsson competed in six Whitbread/Volvo Ocean Races, beginning with Alaska Eagle in 1981-82. He served as skipper on several occasions, including EF Language in 1997-98, which won the race. He also skippered Assa Abloy in the 2001-02 edition and was involved in the design and build of the boat.

Beyond his on-the-water success, Olsson was highly regarded for his leadership skills, his ability to build and motivate teams, and his dedication to mentoring young sailors. He held various shore-based roles in subsequent Volvo Ocean Races, including as a consultant and coach.

Olsson also contributed significantly to the America's Cup, working with several syndicates. He was a sought-after advisor and tactician.

He died of a stroke in 2013 at the age of 64. The Magnus Olsson Priset, an annual award presented to individuals who have made significant contributions to Swedish sailing, is named in his honor. He left a lasting legacy in the world of sailing, remembered for his competitive spirit, sportsmanship, and dedication to the sport.
