ME1 (gene)
ME1 (myelin protein zero-like 1) is a gene that in humans is located on chromosome 11q12.3. It encodes a protein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily. The specific function of the ME1 protein is not yet fully elucidated, but research suggests it may play a role in nervous system development and possibly myelination, although this role is less well-defined than that of its better-studied paralog, Myelin Protein Zero (MPZ).
The gene's homology to MPZ indicates a potential involvement in cell adhesion and/or signal transduction within the nervous system. Further research is needed to clarify the precise mechanisms by which ME1 protein functions and its potential contribution to neurological processes and diseases. Variations or mutations in the ME1 gene have been associated with certain neurological conditions in some studies, but more investigation is required to establish causal relationships. The current understanding of ME1's role is limited compared to other genes involved in myelination. Its expression patterns and protein interactions are areas of ongoing investigation.
